Research Question: Can less education be a contributing factor to committing a crime?
Possible answer: Less education can not be a contributing factor in committing a crime because of those with more education still commit crimes, even the same ones as those with less education
Title of Source & Author: Chasing the Dragon ( video) by the Federal Bureau of Investigation
Summary: The video, Chasing the Dragon, showed how different people were affected by the excessive abuse of a substance, prescribed or non-prescribed. Each person had a different background that leads them to abuse the drug. Their abuse affected their lives negatively as well as the people around them, leading to these people sharing experiences of using the substance. Those who fell victim to the drugs explained how they were never taught about drugs and never fully understood the consequences that the drugs can cause. Once in prison they were forced to get help, learned from their own experience and understood how the drugs impacted their lives. We were able to see that once a drug user was out of prison they did not survive being sober for long and almost immediately went back. This indicates that once a person succumbs to a drug, no matter how educated they are, they are not able to have complete self-restraint against that drug.
Evaluation: This video is relatively recent being that it was released in the year 2016 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It also incorporates people who have personally used or know someone who used a drug or multiple drugs. They share their experiences and the outcomes of such events. We can use this video to explain that the level of education does not completely contribute to committing a crime due to the fact that these people had later in life been educated on drug abuse and its negative outcomes through incarceration, however, once they were allowed to go back to society, a majority of them once again began to abuse drugs.
The video “Chasing the Dragon” relates to the question of, can less education be a contributing factor to committing a crime, since throughout the video we were able to see each prisoner describe their story. We were also able to hear that each person had a long journey and they all tried to leave drugs although the temptation won. The video is useful since they had also explained that they had difficulty to leave drugs and didn’t really know where to go for help.
