Racism In Modern America

What Racial issues are still prevalent to society and How can we prevent them from happening?

Forman, T., & Lewis, A. (2006). RACIAL APATHY AND HURRICANE KATRINA: The Social Anatomy of Prejudice in the Post-Civil Rights Era. Du Bois Review, 3(1), 175-202.

This articles describes the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina down in the south. It shows the crisis and discrimination many African-American people faced when it came to recieving help from the Government. Compared to the Caucasian people who suffered from the Hurricane, African-Americans were denied many things such as insurance, clean food supplies, and rapid recovery unlike the Caucasian folks in the neighborhood. This article also looks at the post-civil rights era and compares to how black people in the south are being treated. The article further on explains how in order to fix this problem you need to get rid of “White Apathy” and “Ignorance” from society.

This Article is significant to my research paper because it provides a recent example of how African-American people have been racially profiled and treated different from their white counterparts. This article not only explains the problem but it gives alternatives and solutions in order for people to change society. Last but not least it relates back to the civil rights era and it compares and contrasts the efforts that have been put into place to see whether it helped or not.

Goffe, L. (2014). Modern day lynching? Black America vs white police. New African, (543), 80.

This article describes the recent shootings that have been committed by white police officers against unarmed African-American individuals. Some examples of the victims mentioned in the passage is Micheal Brown, Eric Garner, Tamar Rice and Jacob Crawford. Many white cops are threatened and face fear of black people. The article describes how black people are always targeted and judged based on the color of their skin. No matter what they will always have a target on their backs paper.

This Article is relevant to my research topic because it shows instances where people who are supposed to be enforcing the law are in fact violating it. The article also explains how society plays a role in this such as the media. It provides perfect examples and ideas that I can bring up in my research paper and this article will give me many textual evidence that I may need in the future.

Harris, G. (2015). America's Problem of Race: The Black and Latino Man Divided by a Common African Ancestry. Journal of Public Affairs Education, 21(4), 495-510.

This peer-review journal discuss the relationship between the latino community and the balck community. It discusses tactics that the police use to make them turn against each other. It also relates back to the civil rights movement and how history is basically just repeating itself and what happened decades ago it not being dealt with. The idea that they are making people from the same minority group go against each other is ridiculous.

This article can benefit me because it talks about racism and discrimination right where I can relate to, in New York City. Another reason why this article is very important is because I can compare the results of the efforts that are being made to stop this constant discrimination and try to compare any alterinitives from the ither sources that I mentioned above.

Laura Bustos, Lady Caro, & Karen Chisco. (2016). Racism in America: Challenges in the Modern World. Ciudad Paz-ando, 9(2), 107-119.

This article discusses the ideas about “white privilege” and it further studies the incident about innocent unarmed black people being killed such as Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin. This article also relates back to the time in which Martin Luther King introduced the idea of the Civil Rights Movement in order for African-Americans to get equal rights. They also mentioned Abraham Lincoln and his way of the Emancipation proclamation.

This article is very useful because it will show me ideas thatI can relate back to and I can compare this article with the first one and get as many examples as possible. This article talks about “white Privilege” and I can introduce this topic because no one else talked about it.

Research Topic Question: What racial issues might still be prevalent?  How to prevent racial prejudice and discrimination in society?

The topic of racial injustice and racial issues in society is very relevant today. But the idea of this topic is that it may seem vague and not talked about because people assume that segregation has ended racial inequality is not as bad as it was during The Civil Rights Movements. But as a woman of color I can speak for not only African-Americans but any other minority group to show that racial issues and racial inequality is still prevalent in society today. I want to further study this topic and reveal the truth about how many minority groups face racial prejudice and discrimination. This can include people being discriminated at their workplace. This can also include the fact that the majority of people in The United States that receive any government assistance program is people of color. There are many other racial issues that are prevalent in society and I want to further explore them. I also want to know if there are any efforts to even prevent these injustices from happening or are there any rules set in place that will punish the people who commit these acts against minorities.  I also want to bring up stereotypes and relate them back to why racial prejudice and injustices happen. There are many stereotypes that people come up with everyday and it has affected the lives of many people of color and it has created this gap between whites and minority groups in America. I could relate to so many things about this topic and bring up so many examples throughout history and connect it to the present.

    The Passageway to Success
A reading that I have and use on a daily basis is Annotating. From the first time being introduced to this topic I hate it. As a reader I didn't think that I always needed to annotate my text for the purpose of taking down important information.

I always struggled reading pieces of texts. Whenever I was taking a test or doing a homework assignment I always found it very hard for me to concentrate and understand what the author was saying especially if I was long reading assignment with challenging vocabulary. The first step to Annotating is to underline important key details. It’s much easier to find the main idea and summarize it in your own words so you can comprehend what is being talked about in the text. The next step I do is to make sure to circle any unfamiliar vocabulary I may not know or struggle with. I will try to figure out the word by using context clue thus will help me understand the text more. Annotating made me become an active reader. I suddenly had an urge to read many things and to broaden my vocabulary. Reading made me ask questions and explore many new things that were introduced to me. Annotating may seem boring at first but it is very beneficial to you. I want people to know that annotating may seem very repetitive and unnecessary but it helps you in the long run.

Group Work 11/11

The Perils of Obedience
Purpose of the study?
The point of this experiment is to see how far a person will go when they are in a concrete and difficult situation in which he is ordered to cause pain to a victim. In the article, the subject has the right to inflict pain to the subject by using high voltage.

Outcome of the study?
The outcome of this study was that the people didn’t inflict pain on an individual because they wanted to obey the authority, they wanted to please them.

Opinions and Social Pressure
Purpose of the study? The purpose of this article was to determine which was more important to a person, the size of the majority or unanimity. The question that was answered was “is having a group of people unanimously choosing an obvious incorrect answered more important or ‘correct’ or is displaying individuality by disagreeing to a group of people the correct action? A group of scientists held an experiment with a number of college students, the college students were put into groups. In each group only one college student was a true subject, the other members of the group were told ahead of time to state incorrect answers in some trials. Consequently, the majority of the true subject became surprised and will eventually answer after pausing for a while, speaking in a low voice or smiling in an embarrassing way. The experiment was to measure the belief of conformity in a person.
Outcome of the study?
Throughout the article, the guys who were not aware of the purpose of the article, constantly doubted their own beliefs. They felt pressured by the other guys giving the wrong answers to agree with them to fit in, therefore they picked the wrong answer in order to not left out. Overall, Asch wanted to show that the majority’s opinion is powerful and it will make someone go against their own beliefs.

Gretchen Bandt is not compassionate when it comes to the experiment because she cares more about her reputation and career. We believe this because throughout the experiment she repeatedly mentions free will and pressures the experimenter to ask the other participant for their consent to continue. The evidence that proves this statement is, “ Brandt: I’d like you to ask him. We came here from our free will. If he wants to continue. I’ll go ahead”.  Meaning that she would continue even if he has a heart condition showing that she is not compassionate of the participant. Another claim is that despite being a medical technician at Yale Medical School, she wants consent because if something was supposed to go wrong her medical license could be revoked. Brandt states “If he wants to continue, I'll go ahead”. She was consistent in finding whether or not the participant really wanted to go through with the experiment. If he was, then she would go ahead with the experiment even though she knows that the guy being shocked has a heart condition. There is a high possibility that she knows what could happen if a patient with heart conditions is given shocks. She cared more about obtaining the money than being responsible for giving shocks to a person with heart conditions without consent. As long as the person with heart condition gave her consent to inflict pain in him, she would do it despite her occupation. If she cared about the person with a heart condition, then she would have expunged herself from the experiment before getting attached to the experiment.  Overall, Brandt was not compassionate due to her reputation on the line.
